The ministry of altar serving gives people of all ages an opportunity to express their spirituality and find out more about our faith. The ministry is open to all parishioners who have received the Sacrament of First Eucharist and can be an important avenue for our young to become involved in the spiritual life of the Church and have a visible role in the parish community as they help lead the worship.
Altar servers add to the solemnity of the Mass and make it an offering that includes all generations. Altar serving helps people of all ages understand the reward of service toward others and their community.
Duties of an Altar Server
Gathering: Both altar serves walk at the front of the gathering procession.
Opening prayer: An altar server holds the missal, so that the priest has both hands free.
Lavabo: One altar server administers the water and the other holds the bowl and towel to the priest as he ritually washes his hands.
Post-Communion prayer: An altar server holds the missal in front of the priest.
Ending procession: Servers lead the procession.
Who can be an Altar Server? Anyone who has received his or her First Communion. The commitment is usually once or twice a month. Parent-child pairs are welcome to serve.
