I pray you all have a wonderful Independence Day Holiday and that you get to spend some quality time with family and friends. I pray also that our country will begin to heal its divisions especially with respect to the overturning of Roe v. Wade. I don’t think it is by any law or lack there of that violence in all its forms, be it mass shootings, abortions, euthanasia, the death penalty, will cease. It is by a renewed respect for the sanctity of life that we can all come together and so we need to continue to live it and pray for it.
In our Gospel this weekend Jesus tells the 72 disciples that he is sending to preach about the coming of the kingdom: “The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few, so pray that the master of the harvest send more laborers.” Little has changed since those days. There are almost 8 billion people on our planet and we have all been charged with preaching the good news of God’s love for all his people. On a very personal level, Jesus challenges us with his message. God is asking for our help. Not just priests and religious, but every person who has knowledge of God and his love. It is by our sowing of the seeds of faith that we can begin to change the hearts and minds of people who are only living for the here and now. Salvation is for all people and we have to let them know that.
